The hidden crisis in UK workplaces: almost one million employees fell ill from work-related stress last year

HSE data shows 964,000 UK workers became mentally unwell through workplace pressure in 2024/25. What that costs an organisation, and why reactive wellbeing no longer answers it.

In 2024/25, 964,000 UK workers became mentally unwell because of workplace pressure. This is not a resilience problem. It is a systems problem.

The latest Health and Safety Executive data has confirmed something many businesses have felt quietly building: work-related stress, anxiety and depression are at the highest levels since records began. Millions of working days were lost. It is one of the defining operational challenges of modern business.

This is not a resilience problem, it is a systems problem

According to Jules Mitchell, founder of The Mental Wealth Revolution, the data reflects a deeper structural issue:

“Work has evolved faster than biology. People are not buckling under pressure because they are weak. They are buckling because they have been operating beyond what the human nervous system is designed to carry. Stress has quietly become the hidden cost running through every organisation.”

Traditional reactive wellbeing strategies often misidentify the real issue. Many focus on managing symptoms through standalone workshops, helplines or apps, rather than proactively addressing the underlying conditions that create chronic overload.

The HSE report points clearly to the drivers: unmanageable workloads, rapid organisational change, the emotional load of modern roles, and sustained pressure to perform.

What this costs an organisation

Employers are already feeling the effects:

  • Teams running with reduced cognitive and emotional capacity
  • Rising sickness absence and presenteeism
  • Experienced staff leaving through exhaustion rather than progression
  • Managers struggling under the emotional weight of supporting burnt-out teams

Small and medium-sized businesses report that burnout is becoming part of the landscape, particularly among high performers.

Why traditional wellbeing strategies are no longer enough

Addressing burnout requires a shift from reactive to proactive:

“You cannot steady a workforce with activities that do not address how the nervous system works. You cannot ease chronic pressure without structural change.”

The Mental Wealth Revolution works from a framework grounded in nervous-system literacy, stress-capacity development and real-time regulation tools. Rather than asking employees to simply cope better, the approach helps them reset physiological stress responses, rewire habitual patterns and reclaim clarity under pressure.

This is delivered through the SPIN Method, already in use across executive teams, emergency services, armed forces, charities, and public and private sector organisations nationwide.

A call to leaders

The HSE data makes one point clear. Survival-mode working is no longer sustainable. There is an opportunity to set a new standard in modern leadership, one that recognises human capacity as a strategic asset rather than an afterthought.

“This is the next frontier of leadership. Not softer, but smarter. Not wellbeing tick-box, but wellbeing as part of the operational structure that enables people to perform at their best.”
